PERSONAL. (1931, August 18). The Daily News (Perth, WA : 1882 – 1950), p. 1 Edition: HOME (FINAL) EDITION.
Mr. C. Datson, speedway rider. of Perth, who returned from England. He said that undoubtedly dirt-track racing was on the wane in England, and only two tracks — Wembley and Westham — were paying propositions. Team racing had kept these tracks going, and the meetings attracted attendances in the region of 40,000. The riders were not doing nearly as well, and during the past season had received £5 appearance money, as compared with £40 and £50 in 1928, when the sport was booming. Each rider had to employ a mechanic, and the earnings of the competitors were gradually getting lower and lower. He did not intend to return to England for the next season.
